Home from our spay

Smokey writes:

I'm home at my foster home again. I'm still very sleepy, and growly at everyone although I let Rori clean one ear before swatting. My belly's shaved and stitched up nicely, and I have a paper collar on with my name on it. When Foster Mommy came to get us, I was back asleep and the vet tech woke me up to put me in the stroller. When Foster Mommy looked at us before she took us outside to go home, I was trying to go back to sleep again.

When we got home, the first thing I did was growl and swat at Carbon, who was checking up on me. Foster Mommy took me out and held me for a while in her lap, petting me and calming me down.

*yawn*

Starla writes:

My spay went well. I'm very groggy, and walking around in circles, but happy. I wanted out, but Mommy says that I can't go back outside for at least 7 days. She and Daddy want to keep me as their kitty! So I guess this is my forever home!

Skylar really likes me and has perked up so much since I've been inside. Daddy says I'm good for him, and I remind him of his sister. I even snuggle with my new buddy. I slept on his tail, and he didn't even mind!

I'm going to eat a few bites and then take a nap on the floor. I'm very sleepy. Good night!

Waiting for Wednesday

Smokey: I'm waiting for Wednesday. Foster Mommy says it's going to be a very busy day. Starla and I are going somewhere together in the stroller.

Rori: It's exciting, but not in a good way.

Smokey: Why not? Going to class was fun.

Rori: You're going to the vet to get spayed, like I was.

Smokey: But you've been getting tummy rubs all the time since your spay, so why is that a bad thing?

Rori: You get locked in a cage with no food or water, then you wait. You're lonely and bored, and there's no one to play with. There's sounds of other animals, but you can't see them, so it's scary. Then they take you out and poke you, making you fall asleep, then steal your fur and cut you. When you wake up, you feel all funny and can't walk right. You hurt a lot.

Smokey: You're right; that doesn't sound like fun at all. But then I get to come back here, right? And eat and drink?

Rori: Yep.

Smokey: And play again?

Rori: They won't let you roughhouse for a bit. They might even lock you in the bedroom and put a cone on your head, like they did with me.

Smokey: But I'll be in there with Starla, so I can play with her.

Rori: Yeah, so that will be better than with me. I didn't have anyone in there with me to play.

Smokey: I hope Starla will want to play with me. She did all the time when I was outside.

News from the Food Bowl

Feral Friday food bowl rollcall at the green house:

Outdoor Fluffy Buddy, Big-headed black tom kitty, orange-headed kitty, Boo-Boo, Little Bit, the raccoon, Starla, SpongeBob, Shadow, and the orange cat from down the street. Everyone came this week again, even the raccoon.

No females are in heat anymore, so the yowling has gone away for the moment. Starla and Smokey will be spayed on March 4th, and we have a vet for the big-headed black tom kitty to be neutered as well (but not a date set yet). All their "fixes" will be done through the Tom & Mom Special. Many, many thanks to organizations like these who provide low-cost spaying and neutering!

Unusual happenings at the green house

Warning: These pictures not suitable for kittens under the age of 4 months!

These are both female cats. The tabby one is Rori, who just got spayed. She is alpha cat of the house. The grey one is our foster kitten Smokey, who is in heat. This is what happened when Rori got fed up with Smokey's yowling!

Obviously, they are going to be spending time in separate rooms now when the humans are not home, and Smokey will be in with me for sleeping until she gets spayed. I looked it up on the net, and it seems to be a common dominance behavior for females.

It's officially mating season here

From the sounds and sights outside, the Trailer Kitties are ready for mating season. Neighbor kitty Boo-Boo is in heat, and Outdoor Fluffy Buddy, the black big-head kitty, and the white and orange big-head kitty are following her. Starla is not in heat yet, as far as we know. Smokey is inside and being put in the bedroom whenever the outside door is opening, because she's in heat as well.

Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon (FCCO) said in its last newsletter that many of the females being brought in now are in heat already. Please, please, people, spay and neuter your cats! We are trying to find places to get everyone but Boo-Boo fixed. Since BB techinically is our neighbor's cat, we have no control over her in that regard. (Mommy wishes we could just scoop her up and fix her too, though.)

Mommy wrote a new article on HubPages with tips for fostering kittens. If it helps even one kitten, she says it's worth it.
