Weird question....

Skylar writes:

Mom talked with my regular doctor today, and we have a strange question!  Including the vet, who doesn't know the answer to this either!

Has anyone ever had their thyroid levels continue to go low?  I had mine checked back in November, after 4 years with hyper-T my meds were decreased from four to three, then two pills a day.  Redid tests, and it was normal again.  Now, after my vet appointment last week, my thyroid levels are low again, so we're trying half a pill per day.

The vet has no clue why I'm suddenly "getting better", or at least my thyroid levels are!  My creatinine & BUN are slightly elevated, just out of the normal range, not as bad as we'd originally thought (we got the exact numbers this time).  That part's to be expected, and I'm still going to have my yummy canned food and my sub-Q fluids to try to keep my kidneys semi-under control.  But we're (and the vet is) absolutely clueless as to why my thyroid levels are normalizing!!!

Any advice/help/experience would be appreciated!

  1. Hormones fluctuate for lots of reasons. I'm not sure anyone ever knows why something happens with them (they know how to fix it usually). I'd be glad they are going the right way and just leave it at that! :)

  2. Chey & Gemini are right about hormones, sometimes they up and down and no one knows why.

Did the vet do a Free T4 test or just the normal T4 blood test? The Free T4 is supposed to give a more accurate indication of true T4 levels (so our vet says). We also wondered if your Parathyroid glands might have something to do with the change?

Whatever is going on Skylar, we hope that you continue to do well and enjoy life for many more years yet.

  3. Good suggestion about the Free T4, and also check the T3.

Annie is hyper-t, on meds since last September, and while I've done a lot of reading on it, I've not heard of levels dropping, perhaps to the point where meds are no longer needed. Not without the cat having undergone the I-131 treatment!

  4. We have no idea, but if they are going in the right direction it sounds good to us.

  5. Looks like you've gotten some great advice from Cheysuli and gemini, Whicky and Kea. Whatever is going on, we are glad to hear that Skylar's numbers are going in the "right" direction. :)

    Have a great weekend.
